Trell's Race for the Heisman Week 5 Edition
1. Marcus Mariota (21/25 329 yards 5 TD | 58 rush yards) Mariota completed 84 percent of his passes and 5 touchdowns to beat a pesky Washington State team. Three of Mariota's five touchdowns came in a closely contested second half. The Ducks QB has attempted 96 passes and 13 touchdowns without throwing an interception. Not only is Marcus Mariota the front runner for the Heisman, he looks to be the number 1 pick in the next NFL draft.
2. Kenny Hill (16/22 2 TD | 57 rush yards ) Kenny Hill continues to impress me with his poise and play making ability. Despite throwing his 1st interception of the season vs SMU, Hill continues to lead the SEC in passing yards. After Saturday's match up against Arkansas, Texas A&M will face three ranked SEC West opponents in a row. That stretch will determine if Kenny Hill is Heisman material or just took advantage of a sub par non conference schedule.
3. Todd Gurley (6 carries 73 yards) Gurley had a short day against Troy in the 66-0 blowout win. The junior running back is averaging right under 10 yards a carry this season. Gurley is 3rd in the SEC in rushing yards (with 20 less carries than the 2 players in front of him) and is tied for 3rd in touchdowns.
4. Everett Golson (IDLE) Golson and the Fighting Irish will come off a bye week to face Syracuse in the Carrier Dome. Golson came back after missing last season to lead Notre Dame to an early top 10 ranking. A home game versus Stanford and a trip to Tallahassee to take on the Seminoles will be pivotal in Everett Golson's Heisman chances. Big numbers in those games will surly put him near the top of the list.
5. Amari Cooper (10 catches 201 yards 3 TD) There has not been a wide receiver to win the Heisman since Desmond Howard did it in 1991. Cooper could change that with his play this season. Another double digit reception effort verses Florida adds Amari's name to the Heisman list. The junior wide receiver leads the nation in receptions and yards and is 3rd in touchdowns. the success of the Crimson Tide rely on Cooper's steller play. If he can continue to put up record breaking numbers, Cooper could become Alabama's second Heisman winner.
