USM Escapes Alcorn

A win for the Golden Eagles is just
another step towards getting better. Southern Miss take on the #3 Alabama
Crimson Tide next weekend. Do not let this game discourage you fans, believe it
or not this game can end up being a learning experience for the Eagles. Playing
teams such as Mississippi State and Alabama just makes the conference games that
much easier. As long as the Eagles key players remain healthy, I believe they
can do some damage in the western division of Conference USA.
The last time these two teams met,
Southern Miss outpaced Alcorn State 52-0. Southern Miss picked up their first
win of the season against Alcorn but was a lot closer than what fans wanted to
see with the score being 26-20
Kicker Corey Acosta had career high
nailing 4 field goals, including a 50 yard make (longest of his career). The
freshman Ito Smith had his first career 100-yard game of his young career
rushing for 118-yards on 32 carries. Nick Mullens had a solid performance where
he was 21-33 passing with 208-yards 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Southern
Miss led 20-7 at halftime but was outscored by the Braves 13-6 in the second
half. The defense only gave up 98 yards passing but Braves quarterback Jr.
Gibbs rushed for 161 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. The Golden Eagles forced
4 turnovers including the game clinching interception by redshirt freshman
Jomez Applewhite.
