Grading NFL Rookie Quarterbacks

*(min 100 pass attempts)

Blake Bortles (1st rd / 3rd pick JAX) It's hard to gauge Blake Bortles success with him playing in Jacksonville of all places but there were some signs of leadership from the first quarterback taken in the 2014 draft. Versus the New York Giants, Bortles engineered an 11 play, 55 yard drive to set up a game winning field goal to give Jacksonville their second win of the season. Brotles however has had trouble keeping the ball, throwing 17 interceptions this season (Jay Cutler leads the NFL with 18 int). If Jacksonville wants to get out of the AFC South cellar, Bortles must cut into his turnover margin. This is a young football team, they will grow together. Expect to see a vast improvement from Blake next season. Grade: C+

Johnny Manziel (1st rd / 22 pick CLE) The Browns used their second 1st round pick on the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and rightfully so. The Browns were 4-12 and struggled heavily on keeping a consistent offense (outside of Josh Gordon). The popular assumption was that Manziel was going to be named the starter from day one, but wasn't the case under first year head coach Mike Pettine. Johnny Football played in 5 games this season, starting in two of them for Cleveland. In the two starts, Manziel was 13-16 112 yards and 2 interceptions. There were flashes of playmaking ability throughout his playing time but it just doesn't look like Manziel was ready for the NFL quite yet. Grade: D+

Teddy Bridgewater (1st rd / 32 pick MIN) The Minnesota Vikings used the last pick of the first round on a quarterback that many analysts had being the first pick overall. Bridgewater stepped in week 3 in New Orleans and despite the loss played exceptionally well. The following week Teddy tallied his first 300 yard passing game against the Falcons in the 41-28 win. This season Bridgewater is 3rd among rookies in passing yards and second in touchdowns while competing 64% of his pass attempts. Without Adrian Peterson, Bridgewater lead the Vikings to a 5-6 record. In a division with two playoff teams, that's impressive for the 3rd quarterback taken in the draft. Grade: B+

Derek Carr (2nd rd / 4th pick OAK) Carr has all the NFL intangibles. Big arm, size, IG and the ability to make the late game throws. Playing in Oakland could be considered a quarterback's graveyard but Carr has been very impressive considering the talent he is surrounded with. Derek has started every game for the Raiders this season throwing for over 3100 yards with 20 touchdowns (both lead rookies). Oakland must get some talent around Carr in order to produce some wins. For now, Derek Carr is the right man for the job for the Raiders. Grade: B

Zach Mettenberger (6th rd / 7th pick TEN) Mettenberger has stepped in and started 6 games for the Titans in this rookie campaign. Whilw replacing often injured Jake Locker, the former LSU standout has thrown for a little over 1400 yards with 8 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. The good news is that Mettenberger has had plenty of snaps to get his feet wet in the NFL. The bad news is that the Titans haven't won a game since week 6 over Jacksonville. There were some positives this season for Zach (345 yard game at Philadelphia) but the Titans will use there top 2 pick on a quarterback. Grade: D
