Trell's Race for the Heisman Rankings Week 2 edition

Image
1. Jameis Winston FSU ( 25-40 370 yards 1 TD 2 INT | 1 rush TD) Jameis may not have look flawless but after a long offseason and being a stud on the baseball field maybe fatigue played a factor. Nevertheless, Winston's 28 yard touchdown scamper in a close game is a nice way to impress early Heisman voters. If Jameis Winston's off the field troubles don't catch up with him, this could be the start of a back-to-back Heisman campaign. 2. Marcus Mariota ORE (14-20 267 yards 3 TD | 43 rush yards 1 TD) Marcus Mariota services were only needed for the 1st half versus South Dakota but that's all it took for Mariota to show the country that he hasn't lost a step. If Mariota has a big game versus #7 Michigan St., expect Marcus to become the front-runner in a two man race to begin the season. 3. Todd Gurley UGA (15 car 198 yards 3 TD | 100 yard kick return TD) Gurley destroyed a #16 ranked Clemson that some predicted as a dark horse to make the playoffs.  After coming

College Football Games to Watch Week 2

Ed Wilkins | College Football Analyst Michigan (1-0) @ #16 Notre Dame (1-0) 7:30 PM NBC ·           This classic rivalry has been going on for the past 120 years! The Fighting Irish and  Wolverines  will have one more battle this Saturday in South Bend. Both teams are coming off easy victories last week with Notre Dame defeated Rice 48-17 and Michigan redeemed themselves against Appalachian State 52-14. The Fighting Irish have their sights set on qualifying for the College Football Playoffs, one loss to their rivals can hurt their chances. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly feels that if his defense can shut down Devin Gardner then Golston and the offense can bring in the W. Notre Dame is a slight favorite but don't rule Michigan out. Virginia Tech (1-0) @ #8 Ohio State (1-0) 8:00 PM ESPN ·         The Buckeyes outlasted Navy last Saturday in Baltimore 34-17. Redshirt Freshman QB J.T. Barrett, in replace of injured Braxton Miller threw for 226 yards on 12-15 passi

Hope for USM Football

Ed Wilkins | College Football Analyst The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss issippi  is one of th e youngest teams in the nation. USM  only starts 5 seniors with the bulk of the roster being  sophomores  and  juniors.  The sophomore Nick   Mullens  is under his second year under Coach  Monken  as the starting quarterback. Mullens  has a new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey who happened to coach  Mullens  back in high school at Spain Park (Hoover, AL).  Mullens  has the ability to be a great leader like a Southern Miss legend by the name of Austin Davis. Southern Miss is young in the backfield  also. Junior Jalen Richard, Sophomore George Payne and  true Freshman Ito Smith look to carry the load for the team this season. The receivers are led by Senior  Markese  Triplett but anchored by young sophomore talent such as “T-Man” Holmes, James Cox, and Marquise  Ricard . Defensively the Eagles are young but somewhat experienced. Junior D-linemen Michael Smith and Rakeem Nunez

Trell's AFC Prediction

AFC East 1. Patriots (13-3) Easily the best team in the division and arguably the NFL, the Patriots will have nothing but Super Bowl aspirations entering this season. Tom Brady still can play at a MVP caliber with a host of "plug and play" players on offense, including his favorite target Rob Gronkowski.  The biggest splash made this offseason maybe on the defensive side of the ball with the signings of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. The much improved defense will be key in getting Brady his elusive 4th championship. 2. Jets (8-8)   Rex Ryan is back as the Jets look to improve on last years surprising 8-8 season with a revamped receiving group with Eric Decker and Jacoby Ford.  More importantly, the Jets signed speedster Chris Johnson to improve a backfield that was quietly top 10 in the NFL last season. Health has been an issue for the Jets defense in recent years, if they can improve on the 22nd ranked pass defense maybe Rex Ryan can sneak his team into the last

Week 2 Playoff Projections

Ed Wilkins | College Football Analyst # 1 Florida State 1-0 (LW: Win: OKST F/37-31) ·          Many threw salt on Florida State for just beating a feisty Oklahoma State team by six points. Jameis Winston threw for 370 yards with just 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions but had a Heisman like 28 yard run touchdown late in the 3 rd Quarter. The defense gave up 31 points when just last year the scoring defense for FSU was at 12.1 points per game, but look at it like this. Florida State is finding out what their reloaded team can do and will just continue to get better week in and week out. The Seminoles take on The Citadel this weekend followed by a bye week. Do not sleep on the defending National Champions. #2 Alabama 1-0 (LW: Win: WVU F/33-23) ·          It is a new generation in a sense for the Crimson Tide this year. New Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin (Former Southern Cal Head Coach) will be calling plays for the great Nick Saban. Quarterback Blake Sims showed his inexp

Trell's NFC Prediction

NFC East 1. Eagles (10-6) Losing Desean Jackson will not slow down Chip Kelly's offense. With McCoy, 3rd down specialist Darren Sproles and help from an improved front 7, the Eagles should run away with this division. 2. Cowboys (8-8) Good news...Romo is back. Bad news....Romo is back. The Cowboys must improve in the secondary plus an extra consistent Tony Romo in order to contend for a playoff spot.    3. Redskins (6-10) Defense looks mediocre at best and the play of RGIII this preseason has been mind boggling.  Hopefully Alfred Morris can carry the offense until the RGIII-D-Jack connection gets on the same page. 4 Giants (5-11) The magic has ran out for Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning. An upgrade in the secondary will bring a fresh start to that side of the ball but with minimum transactions made on the offensive side of the ball, its going to be a long season for Giants fans   NFC North 1. Packers (12-4) Aaron Rodgers will be MVP-like this season

Trell's College Football Top 25 Week 2 Edition

1. Florida State (1-0)  W vs Ok.St 37-31 - Shaky start for the defending national champs but Jameis Winston steps up and leads the Seminoles to the win. 2. Alabama (1-0) W vs WVU 33-32 - Blake Sims played near perfect football in his first start for the Crimson Tide. Defense was questionable but that's normal when Nick Saban goes up against high-Tempo offenses. 3. Oregon (1-0) W vs USD 62-13 - Typical Oregon season opener. Blowout win vs cupcake school. 4. Oklahoma (1-0) W vs La.Tech 48-16 - Oklahoma didn't seem like they lost a step after the Sugar Bowl win vs Alabama last season. 5. Georgia (1-0) W vs Clemson 45-21 - Manhandling a ranked team always ranks high in my book.  Todd Gurley look to be the leader in challenging Winston for the Heisman Trophy. 6-25 6. Auburn 7. Michigan St. 8. Texas A&M 9. Ohio St. 10. Baylor 11. LSU 12. Stanford 13. USC 14. UCLA 15. Ole Miss 16. Notre Dame 17. Arizona St. 18. Wisconsin 19. Nebraska 20. Kansa
