The SportsPACK NBA Regular Season Awards

MVP: Russell Westbrook Oklahoma City Thunder This year's MVP race has been the closest it's been in recent memory. With 5 legit candidates, anyone of them is well deserving of the award but my choice is Westbrook. Not only did he break a record I thought would never be broken with 42 triple-doubles, but after losing 3 out of their top 5 scorers, Westbrook still has the Thunder in the playoffs as a 6th seed and lead the NBA in scoring. James Harden had an outstanding season but has a lot more help in Houston than Westbrook has in OKC, which was one of my biggest deciding factors.

Defensive Player of the Year: Draymond Green Golden State Warriors After coming in 2nd in DPOY voting 2 seasons in a row Draymond Green final wins the award. Averaging 2 steals a game, Draymond is tied with Wizards point guard John Wall for 1st in the NBA. Green can guard all positions effectively and is the anchor for a Golden State defense that leads the NBA in defensive field goal percentage.

6th Man of the Year: Eric Gordon Houston Rockets After 2 injury-riddled and sub par seasons in New Orleans, Gordon has found a home in Houston. Averaging 16.2 points per game off the bench, Gordon is playing his best basketball since the '12-'13 season. Lou Williams was a shoe-in for this award during the 1st half of the season but the trade to Houston knocked him out the race. Eric Gordon had high expectations coming out of Indiana that most would say he didn't reach but being a 6th man is a role that Gordon can be efficient in for years to come

Most Improved: Giannis Antetokounmpo Milwaukee Bucks The Greek Freak is the most exciting young player to watch in the league. The 6'11" combo guard can play any position on the floor on both ends. Antetokounmpo is the first player in NBA history to be in the top 20 in 5 major statistical categories. His play has the Bucks 6th in the east posed to make an upset bid versus the Toronto Raptors. Giannis will be a perennial all star and future MVP.

Coach of the Year: Brad Stevens Boston Celtics This award was just as close as the MVP award. Scott Brooks in Washington, Mike D'Antoni in Houston and Steve Kerr are strong candidates but Stevens gets the edge. Playing half the season without your best defender in Avery Bradley, Stevens still magaged to get the Celtics its first number 1 seed since the 2007-2008 season. Stevens has be one of the best coaches since he first arrived in Boston and should expect a few more coach of the year awards in his career.

Rookie of the Year: Buddy Hield Sacramento Kings Buddy Hield's rookie year has been an unique one. Drafted 7th overall by the New Orleans Pelicans, Hield play sparingly throughout the beginning of the season. The 2-time Rookie of the Month (December and February) is averaging 15.1 ppg and shooting 43% from 3-point range since joint the Kings. There wasn't much star power in this draft coming into the season but a few rookies have been consistent contributors to their teams and Buddy Hield is on the top of that list.
