Hope for USM Football

The Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi is one of the youngest teams in the nation. USM only starts 5 seniors with the bulk of the roster being sophomores and juniors.

The sophomore Nick Mullens is under his second year under Coach Monken as the starting quarterback. Mullens has a new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey who happened to coach Mullens back in high school at Spain Park (Hoover, AL). Mullens has the ability to be a great leader like a Southern Miss legend by the name of Austin Davis. Southern Miss is young in the backfield also. Junior Jalen Richard, Sophomore George Payne and true Freshman Ito Smith look to carry the load for the team this season. The receivers are led by Senior Markese Triplett but anchored by young sophomore talent such as “T-Man” Holmes, James Cox, and Marquise Ricard.

Defensively the Eagles are young but somewhat experienced. Junior D-linemen Michael Smith and Rakeem Nunez look to hold their own on in the trenches. Linebacker Alan Howze will lead the crew but lookout for JUCO linebacker Brian Anderson and Junior Terrick Wright to make impacts on the defensive side of the ball. On the back end, Jacorious Cotton is back after serving under academic probation for a year. Cotton and Emmanuel Johnson will be a fun pair of safeties to watch. Corner Kalan Reed will lead the corners with true Freshman Picasso Nelson starting on the other side. Also keep eyes out on a pair of RS-Freshmen corners Trae Collins and Bassfield's own Jomez Applewhite.

USM took a disappointing loss to in-state rivals Mississippi State 49-0. The Eagles take on Alcorn State this weekend as I expect them to gain some sort of confidence and a win at home. Do not give up hope on these Eagles.. Keep hope and watch the team blossom when conference play begins. Southern Miss will only get better, stay tuned.
