Trell's Race for the Heisman Week 6 Edition

1. Marcus Mariota (IDLE) Mariota was on a bye week Saturday but his play throughout Oregon's first four games is more than enough to keep the junior quarterback the front runner for the Heisman.  Marcus leads the nation in completion percentage (74%) and quarterback rating (218.0). Huge conference game coming up for the Ducks as an undefeated Arizona team comes to Eugene. Consistent play in conference games provide a resume booster when its time for Heisman voting. Expect Mariota to continue putting up big numbers.

2. Kenny Hill (21/41 386 yards 4 TD) Kenny Hill had his first "Heisman Moment" this week versus Arkansas. Hill completed two passes in the final 2:29 to tie the game and a touchdown pass in the first play of overtime to win. The sophomore Hill is top five in passing yards, touchdowns and quarterback rating. The Aggies will travel to #12 Mississippi State. A couple Heisman moments in this game could make "Kenny Trill" the new Heisman front runner.

3. Todd Gurley (28 carries 208 yards 2 TD) Gurley set a career high in rushing yards against the Tennessee defense averaging 7 yards a carry. A 51-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter open up the lead for the Bulldogs who struggled in the passing game. Todd Gurley is 2nd in the SEC in rushing yards and is averaging 8.8 yards per carry. In comparison, Mark Ingram averaged 6.1 yards during his Heisman campaign in 2009. Georgia will play Vanderbilt Saturday. I predict another 200 yard rushing performance against the 69th ranked rushing defense in the nation.

4. Everett Golson (32/39 362 yards 4 TD) Everett Golson completed a school record 25 straight completions on the way to a 31-25 road victory versus Syracuse.  Despite throwing his first 2 interceptions of the season, Golson lead the Fighting Irish offense to 523 total yards. Notre Dame will play at home versus #14 Stanford. Expect Golson to stay in the Heisman running the he can keep the turnovers down against a tough Pac-12 defense.

5. Amari Cooper (IDLE) Alabama will play their first true road game Saturday versus #11 Ole Miss. Ole Miss defense is 6th in passing yards allowed and tied for 2nd in intercepting the ball. Amari will have his work cut out for him as I'm sure he will see numerous double teams and shaded coverage. A big game against this stellar defense will definitely put Cooper into serious consideration for the Heisman.

Dark Horse

Ameer Abdullah - Nebraska (22 carries 208 yards 3 TD) The country has to take notice at the senior running back in Lincoln. Abdullah posted his 3rd 200 yard game this weekend against Illinois.  This season, Ameer leads the nation in rushing yards with 833 and had 10 total touchdowns. Abdullah is a big part in the success of the Cornhuskers this season as they sit 5-0 for the first time since 2010. Nebraska only play two ranked teams, one Saturday when they travel to #10 Michigan State. Not too many opportunities to show a national audience his skill set so if Ameer capitalize this weekend, he could find himself in the thick of the Heisman running.
