Rondo to Dallas is a Perfect Match

The Dallas Mavericks is currently 5th in the western conference with a 20-8 record. Critics might say that this is one of the most talent Dallas Mavericks teams since the 2011 championship year. Bringing Tyson Chandler back to defend the paint and paying a truckload of money to get the services of Chandler Parsons we two major plus signs for the Mavericks off season. Yes this team is talented but can they withstand the test of the western conference playoffs is the biggest question. with Jameer Nelson as the starting point guard, the Mavericks we extremely handicapped at the point guard position until the trade for Rajon Rondo. The Mavericks traded Brandon Wright, Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson and two conditional draft picks for the two time NBA assist leader. The Mavericks were already a threat to make a run deep into the playoffs and now with Rondo picking up the slack at point guard, Dallas is ready to make a run at title number two.

Rebounding: The Dallas Mavericks are 17th in team rebounding this season, averaging 42 rebounds a game. That doesn't sound too bad giving that the Mavericks one have one legit rebounder in Tyson Chandler, but when 42 rebounds a game also means you are last in rebounding in your division, that can become a problem in the later months of the season. Solution: At 7.5 rebounds per game, Rondo instantly becomes the second best rebounder on the Dallas roster. With nearly 8 rebounds coming from the point guard position, this high octane offense will become more explosive with Rondo starting fast breaks without an outlet pass.

Defense: One thing that you must do in the western conference in order to win a championship is defend the point guard position. With Steph Curry, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and a host of other score-first point guards in the west, having Jameer Nelson and Raymond Felton guard them is a lost cause. When your defense has to collapse and/or pick up a man every time a point guard drives to the goal, its open season on backdoor cuts and open 3 point shots. Solution: A 4x defense All-Team player Rondo will fix that immediately. I have a lot of respect for the young point guards in the west such as Damian Lillard and Eric Bledsoe. With Rajon's tenacious defense, it will be difficult for any point guard to have a big scoring night.

Offense: As of today the Dallas Mavericks has the number one scoring offense in the NBA (110.1 ppg). What's the problem? This fast break offense is good during the regular season but in a seven game series you are going to need a point guard to control the tempo. Solution: Rajon Rondo is a master at facilitating the basketball. With Monta Ellis and Chandler Parsons on the wings instead of Avery Bradley and Jeff Gree (respectively, of course) I don't see any reason to believe that the Mavs offense will not continue to lead the league. More importantly, Rondo will be able to create in half court sets, which will be a plus during the grind of the western conference playoffs.

Rajon Rondo is a veteran point guard with championship experience that can defend. In the western conference, those intangibles are only founded in very few (if any outside of Tony Parker). Once this team forms a high level of chemistry, the Mavs will be poised to make a deep run into the playoff with a strong possibility of winning their second NBA championship.
