1st Quarter Grades for 1st Year NFL Head Coaches

Mike Pettine - Cleveland Browns (1-2) Pettine inherited a young football team with plenty of potential. Josh Gordon lead the NFL in receiving yards last season and Joe Haden is considered by many as a top 5 cornerback in the league. Unfortunately for Pettine, Gordon was suspended prior to the season starting and the Browns drafted a headache in his own right in Johnny Manziel. Despite numerous off the field distractions, the Cleveland Browns have been competitive in all of their games. Pettine has his team in the top half of the NFL in total offense averaging 363 yards per game but are 30th in yards allowed per game giving up 426 yards a night. Losing two division games is a tough start to a season but those losses were only by 3 and 2 points respectively. Even at 1-2, Coach Pettine has done a great job with this team that most expect to have a top 5 draft pick. Grade: B- Jim Caldwell - Detroit Lions (3-1)  Caldwell took over the...

Trell's Race for the Heisman Week 6 Edition

Image
1. Marcus Mariota (IDLE) Mariota was on a bye week Saturday but his play throughout Oregon's first four games is more than enough to keep the junior quarterback the front runner for the Heisman.  Marcus leads the nation in completion percentage (74%) and quarterback rating (218.0). Huge conference game coming up for the Ducks as an undefeated Arizona team comes to Eugene. Consistent play in conference games provide a resume booster when its time for Heisman voting. Expect Mariota to continue putting up big numbers. 2. Kenny Hill (21/41 386 yards 4 TD) Kenny Hill had his first "Heisman Moment" this week versus Arkansas. Hill completed two passes in the final 2:29 to tie the game and a touchdown pass in the first play of overtime to win. The sophomore Hill is top five in passing yards, touchdowns and quarterback rating. The Aggies will travel to #12 Mississippi State. A couple Heisman moments in this game could make "Kenny Trill" the new Heisman front...

1. Florida State (4-0) W at North Carolina State 56-41 Rashad Greene leads the ACC in receptions and receiving yards Down 24-7 after the 1st quarter, Florida State rallies back from what started off as a disaster return for Jameis Winston. Riddled with injuries defensively, the Seminoles allowed 520 total yards versus previously undefeated NC State. Jameis Winston throws for 365 yards with four touchdowns and two second half interceptions. Senior wide receiver Rashad Greene caught 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. Florida State will face 2-3 Wake Forest in Tallahassee Saturday. 2. Oregon (4-0) IDLE The Ducks will play undefeated Arizona at home after a bye week. The Oregon offense is 4th national in scoring averaging 48.5 points per game. Oregon should not take Arizona lightly. The Wildcats lead the Pac-12 in yards per game with 594 per. Marcus Mariota and the Ducks offense must take care of the ball if they want to avoid the upset. Royce F...

Trell's Race for the Heisman Week 5 Edition

Image
1. Marcus Mariota (21/25 329 yards 5 TD | 58 rush yards) Mariota completed 84 percent of his passes and 5 touchdowns to beat a pesky Washington State team. Three of Mariota's five touchdowns came in a closely contested second half. The Ducks QB has attempted 96 passes and 13 touchdowns without throwing an interception. Not only is Marcus Mariota the front runner for the Heisman, he looks to be the number 1 pick in the next NFL draft. 2. Kenny Hill (16/22 2 TD | 57 rush yards ) Kenny Hill continues to impress me with his poise and play making ability. Despite throwing his 1st interception of the season vs SMU, Hill continues to lead the SEC in passing yards. After Saturday's match up against Arkansas, Texas A&M will face three ranked SEC West  opponents in a row. That stretch will determine if Kenny Hill is Heisman material or just took advantage of a sub par non conference schedule. 3.  Todd Gurley (6 carries 73 yards) Gurley had a short day against Tro...

Week 5 CFB Playoff Pedictions

Image
Week 5 Playoff Projections Ed Wilkins | College Football Analyst #1 Florida State 3-0 (LW: Win: Clemson F/OT-23-17 ) With Jameis Winston suspended for the game, Sean Maguire had to step in at quarterback to escaped Clemson in a thrilling overtime win. Maguire went 21-39 passing with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Florida State looked as if they were going to take a loss as Maguire threw an interception in their own territory with 2:14 remaining in the game. That stingy Florida State defense forced a turnover to get into overtime. A questionable 4 & 1 call from Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney gave the Seminoles all the momentum as they stopped the Tigers. Karolos Williams scored on a 12-yard touchdown run to save Florida State’s season. Winston will be back in the lineup next week as they take on North Carolina State (4-0), perhaps a trap game. #2 Oregon 4-0 (LW: Win: Washington State F/38-31) Superman Mariota threw for 329 yards and five touchdown...
